Amplifying Hosts: Developing Community Leaders to Spread Prevention Information
Presented by Kriztian Luna Corona at the 93rd Annual Mosquito and Vector Control Association of California (MVCAC) Conference in Oakland, CA.
Abstract:
Vector control staff often work on limited time and with limited resources. The San Gabriel Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District’s EcoHealth Vector Education Program is a K - 12 education program that partners with schools and teachers to amplify the District’s message. The program has implemented community education strategies, such as a teacher training program for Operation Mosquito G.R.I.D.- a middle school community science program. The training develops local middle school teachers to facilitate the program from their classrooms. Teachers are trained on the importance of vector control, mosquito basics, and best practices for program facilitation. The EcoHealth program provides teachers with pacing guides, hands-on materials, and facilitation support to successfully implement the program. Since 2022, seven teachers have been trained, yielding 2,101 students to date that have received mosquito education facilitated by these trained teachers and the additional teachers they personally trained on their campus. Results indicate that teachers feel properly trained to teach the content and believe in the mission of the program. Community training programs, such as the teacher training program save the District significant time, money, and resources while empowering community leaders to amplify source reduction and disease prevention messages.
