Dengue in the Golden State: Our Operations Guide for Multiple Local Cases

Antonio Bishop, Vector Control Specialist, presenting at MVCAC conference on dengue operations in California.

Presented by Antonio Bishop at the 93rd Annual Mosquito and Vector Control Association of California (MVCAC) Conference in Oakland, CA.

Abstract:

Dengue virus has become a significant public health concern in the Golden State, driven by rising temperatures and shifting weather patterns that facilitate its spread. With the uptick of recent cases, it is essential to adopt a proactive approach that addresses immediate health risks and implements innovative mosquito control strategies. Fostering employee engagement and buy-in is also crucial for the success of these initiatives, providing training, and encouraging feedback enhances their commitment and empowers them to actively participate in dengue prevention efforts. However, we must also navigate the challenges of limited staffing, budget constraints, and the persistent threat of resource exhaustion. A successful operational framework relies on efficient resource allocation to prioritize high-risk areas, while balancing these demands with the urgent need for a public health response underscores the importance of developing sustainable practices that can endure resource scarcity.

In this presentation, we will discuss how we balanced resources and prioritized our efforts in combating dengue by leveraging data to inform our decision-making. By creating a prioritized list of programs and tasks, we were able to allocate resources strategically and maximize our impact. Regular check-ins with employees were crucial for ensuring their well-being and preventing burnout, allowing us to maintain a motivated and engaged team. This holistic approach not only enhanced our operational efficiency but also fostered a supportive work environment that empowers our staff to contribute effectively to dengue control initiatives.
